This happened. Do you remember it?

If there was one place with plenty of ‘charm’ and a special place in our hearts, it was none other than the Charcutería y Granja El Norte.

In the Plaza de la Barceloneta, for us, it was Sanmi.

“Sausages, Cheeses and Hot Sandwiches” read the sign, but what do we remember most?

Those hot sandwiches that tasted absolutely divine, with the bread pressed flat on the griddle and the expertise of Suso, our favourite “sandwich maker”. And his skill at twirling the bacon or pork loin, flipping it over like a juggler!

As young people, we didn’t have much spare cash to go for tapas, let alone to restaurants, which is why our favourite spot was Granja El Norte.

Sandwiches with pork loin, bacon, chistorra, frankfurters, hot sobrasada, pork loin with cheese, and so on.

We’d just walk in and say: ‘Suso! ‘One pork loin and cheese, two frankfurters, nice and hot!’

We remember that whether we were off to the cinema, or before or after school, it was always the same – we’d always pop into El Norte in search of our ‘sandwich’.

It’s perhaps the place we miss most from our teenage years, or certainly one of them.

I have very fond memories of Suso and his parents, always at the farm.

As for me, my favourite memory is the pork cutlet and cheese sandwich – what about you?
