Teaching values: building a community in Barceloneta

Barceloneta is a neighbourhood with a history, an identity and a cultural diversity that make it unique.

At our school, we see this as an opportunity to nurture open-minded, responsible individuals who are committed to their community. For us, education is not just about imparting knowledge, but also about supporting our pupils in their personal development. That is why the values of Saint John Baptist de La Salle continue to play a central role in our educational project. Respect, empathy, solidarity, responsibility and living together in harmony are part of our daily lives.

The school’s pastoral care programme helps us to give meaning to this approach to education, fostering inner reflection, commitment and a concern for others. Through various pastoral initiatives, we invite pupils to reflect on who they are and how they can help transform their surroundings. This approach resonates particularly strongly with the reality of the Barceloneta neighbourhood, where people from very diverse backgrounds, cultures and life experiences live side by side.

We also run ‘Salle Social Action’, which enables us to address situations of vulnerability and foster a culture of solidarity. Our pupils have the opportunity to discover that small gestures can bring about great changes in people’s lives. In the same vein, the De La Salle Justice, Solidarity and Peace (JUSP) programme helps us to become aware of inequalities and the need to build a fairer society. Through JUSP, we foster values such as the defense of human rights, justice, peace and social commitment. We want our pupils not merely to be bystanders to reality, but people capable of getting involved and transforming it. That is why educational, pastoral and social activities become spaces for learning, participating and living together.

We also believe that this educational task cannot be carried out whilst turning our backs on the neighbourhood and its needs. Our relationship with families, organisations and the wider Barceloneta community helps us to build a more cohesive community. Educating in values means teaching that diversity enriches us and that a sense of community is built by everyone together. It means shaping people who are capable of listening, respecting, helping and committing to others.

From our school, we wish to continue educating with this vision, making education a tool for social transformation.
Because we believe that educating in values means sowing, today, the seeds of a Barceloneta that is fairer, more supportive, more inclusive and full of hope.
