This is the professional who carries out the functions of loading, unloading and handling goods, with everything that this entails.

Nowadays, stevedore is a technician who requires prior and ongoing training to be able to carry out a specialized job. At the same time, he is able to perform various tasks depending on the needs.

We are talking about professionals who are trained to handle medium and large machinery, such as tractors, front loaders, forklifts, gantry cranes, mobile cranes, electric cranes, backhoes, reach trucks, stackers, etc. That is, practically all the machinery used for a transport.

 

Estibarna

Port employment centre at the Port of Barcelona. Founded in 1988 to stabilise the port system.

Estibarna provides stevedoring companies and authorized companies with the qualified human resources necessary to carry out the tasks of loading, unloading and handling goods in the Port of Barcelona.

 

Are you sure this is a man’s job?

There are currently 90 women on the staff. If we take into account that the presence of women in stevedoring is relatively recent, the important thing is not so much that there are more or less women, but that in the new promotions they already make up 40% and in just over two years we have doubled the number that existed. In addition, they now drive machines and two have already become foremen: Rosa Dilla and Chelo Gutiérrez.

The panel indicates the destination and distribution of the equipment and functions, for each shift of the day.

Each person is a numbered token in the color of their section.

Categories

Starting from the figure of the Foreman, currently 10, one for each of the 12 stevedoring companies, except for two smaller companies – Gesica and Ergransa – which do not have one.

There is even a lower category, which are also foremen: the Coordinators. These are only found in large companies: Tercat (BEST), APMT, Autoterminal … It is like a sub-manager .

 

Sections:

Group 0 – Dockers in training: temporarily, for work reasons, there is no one officially at the moment, because everyone already has machines, but technically there are 84 people. The objective is to have part of the staff in Group 0.

Group I – Decks: This is the most physical and hard work, fixing and removing plates to hold the containers, putting on and taking off trestles, all the work that is done on the decks of the ships and that is essential so that the goods are not lost along the way in the waves. There are 159 people.

Group II – Mechanical means: Where all the machines that are taken to the port. Training is essential and is acquired while you are in Group 0, in which you specialize in a specific machine: gantry crane, vancarrier , mafi , shovel, retro octopus, endranza shovel , large steel machine, kone crane , turkey, striker , frontal machine or bull, truck, coachman. There are 636 people, 48 of them women.

Group III – Linda/ Dockhand : The task of controlling the goods. Essential for the organisation of loading and unloading on ships, as they indicate to each stevedore which container or specific piece must be loaded and in what order. There are 186 people, 41 of them women.

Group IV – Foreman: This is the person who directs the operation and has the maximum responsibility for all the members of the work team. At the moment, there are 2 women. The current highly mechanized work teams usually do not exceed 10 people. Back in the days, there were 40 of them.
