The Port of Barcelona has welcomed the first installation of RegenPorts , the program promoted by the Fundación BCN Puerto Innovation to integrate marine regeneration into port activity and demonstrate that ports can become active spaces for biodiversity and innovation.
RegenPorts is developing a comprehensive model to make marine regeneration possible in port environments with technical, scientific and operational guarantees and that is measurable, scalable and replicable The program guarantees that the deployment of the solutions can coexist with port activity. This approach is complemented by a triple validation system (technical, scientific and operational) that ensures the functioning of the technologies, accreditation by research centers and the viability of deployment in the real context of an operating port.
One program, multiple solutions
RegenPorts plans to incorporate into its portfolio different solutions adapted to the various port spaces. The Life Boosting Unidos® ( LBU) , developed by Ocean Ecostructures to favor the recovery of biodiversity in vertical dams and piers, are the first technology in the commercialization phase within RegenPorts . At the same time, the program continues to advance in the validation of new solutions aimed at other areas of intervention. With this deployment, the Port of Barcelona will reach around 100 installed units.
The first installation of the program RegenPorts was held just after Oceans Week, which has once again placed the health of marine ecosystems and biodiversity at the center of the global agenda; and in the framework of the third birthday of the Fundación BCN Puerto Innovation .
Presentation of the program
During the act of presentation of RegenPorts last month of June, the commissioner of Economic Promotion, Commerce and Restoration of the Barcelona City Council, Nadia Quevedo emphasized that “with the new blue economy strategy 2030, Barcelona is taking a step forward to consolidate this sector as one of the city’s major economic engines. RegenPorts it’s not just an environmental project; it’s a project focused on innovation, technology andcreating opportunities.”
The president of the Port of Barcelona and the BCN Puerto Foundation Innovation , José Alberto Carbonell, explained that “the program RegenPorts is born from the conviction that ports have to make economic activity and the regeneration of the marine environment compatible”. In the conclusion, Carbonell emphasized that “despite being born in Barcelona, RegenPorts has been designed to develop in other environments. One more blow, our Port has been able to promote a pioneering program that can be applied in ports all over the world, demonstrating that marine regeneration can coexist with port activity and that ports are capable of generating environmental, social and economic value”.
What is RegenPorts?
It is a Blue Economy programme promoted by the Barcelona Port Authority through the BCN Puerto Innovation Foundation, designed to renaturalise anthropogenised marine environments, driving the evolution of ports to integrate nature. The programme facilitates collaboration between institutions, the scientific community and the private sector to stimulate investment in marine regeneration projects, implementing solutions that restore natural capital, enhance biodiversity and strengthen ecosystem services.
What is BCN Puerto Innovation?
It is a private, not-for-profit foundation, set up by the Port of Barcelona in partnership with Ackcent and Aggity, which aims to transform the maritime and port sector into a leading smart hub where, through knowledge, technological innovation and a commitment to society and the environment, we can realise the principles of the blue economy.
