Fishing is a totally sustainable economic activity. It is our way of life

The fisherman’s job is not to go out and catch as many fish as possible. The fisherman is the first person interested in implementing actions aimed at ensuring that marine resources prevail and regenerate.

For this reason, fishermen in Barcelona apply three sustainable criteria when fishing:

Economical sustainability: the activity is administratively regulated, and a fair fish price is ensured, which allows the fisherman to live with dignity while offering the consumer a fresh, local, and affordable product. That is why restrictive closed seasons and reduced working hours have been established, as well as a total transparency on captures, species, size, and prices.

Environmental sustainability: fishermen are the eyes of the sea. In addition to the fish, they collect kilos and kilos of rubbish every day, and they transport it to specific, clearance points in the port.

Social sustainability: the fisherman’s job is not easy. The marine environment is a hostile place in which teamwork and good organization is essential for it to work. It is a trait often passed on from generations to generations, traditional yet adopted to today’s world, as it has found a very important ally in new technologies that help to offer each time a safer product while respecting the environment and maintaining the profession.
