Recovering Our Cuisine

As in so many aspects of life, in gastronomy it is not always easy to maintain the culinary roots. It is tempting to fall into easier formulas that replace the way of cooking of our ancestors. That is why there is even more merit in these initiatives, most of them new and already consolidated, which are committed to traditional cuisine, in the case of Barceloneta, the traditional seafood cuisine.

Family Sagas

It is interesting to see how the vast majority of these establishments are run by third and even fourth generations. Many of them come from the beloved “merenderos” (traditional restaurants).
In this group we can mention Can Majó, Paco Alcalde , Mesón Barceloneta (formerly Perú), La Gavina, el rey de la Gamba (the king of Gamba), and Ca la Montse. Of course, all those from the Costa family: Cal Pinxo , El Merendero de la Mari, Altamar, or the recently revived Casa Costa. In addition to the “brothers” La Mar Salada and Can Ros.

Neighborhood classics

Others were opened by entrepreneurs from outside who, with respect and good work, have managed to become classic. Among them is the Salamanca Restaurant

Traditionally unique

Can Chusco is a special case that maintains its cuisine and premises unchanged over time. As well as Can Solé or Sheriff, historic establishments with new management that has known how to respect the essence of their establishments.

First generations

Just as meritorious as maintaining a family tradition is opening a new establishment that reflects this local culinary history. This would be the case of Ca La Nuri, Xiringo or Casa Maians , among others.

There are more and of course more tapas bars and tascas. This was not the theme. This time we wanted to highlight the restaurants of cuisine and menu. To thank them for their concern to recover and maintain a culinary tradition that is part of the culture of a neighborhood. Of a fishing neighborhood.
