Do you know what ocean culture is? Also known as Ocean Literacy encompasses all the knowledge that people have about the sea.
What you know about the sea has incalculable value. Whether you learned it in school, walking on the beach or listening to the stories of your grandparents… You have, therefore, ocean culture.
Educational centers, therefore, do not have the exclusivity of the knowledge we acquire about the sea, but, without a doubt, they are important centers. This year, the Institute of Marine Sciences (ICM) has been celebrating, as it has established a collaboration with the European Blue Schools Network, which includes more than 400 centers. The goal? Improve ocean sustainability.
Through the ProBleu projects led by renowned scientist Jaume Piera and BlueLightS Led by leading researcher Carine Simon , the ICM is supporting more than 200 schools, promoting student participation in the protection of marine ecosystems and fostering citizen science. These initiatives promote something as important as collaborative learning. In addition, the use of the eTwinning platform, an online community designed for schools, is also promoted . Therefore, this leading research center in Barceloneta will enhance teacher training to integrate ocean culture into education.
You would be surprised to know how, depending on the different cultures, we have different perceptions of the same ocean. Despite living on the same planet and facing the same environmental challenges, the paradox arises that the way we communicate has to be different in order to talk about the same thing.
On December 19, at the Christmas stage in the Port, located at the Moll de la Fusta, the talk “An ocean, different perceptions” was given by researcher Noemí Fuster. We also discovered how contact with the sea generates an instant change in our emotions.
Being lucky enough to be from Barceloneta, why not use the sea to self-regulate our emotions and promote our physical and mental health?
