How neighborhood commerce is changing

The evolution of commerce in Barceloneta is similar to that of any other neighborhood or town. The change in local commerce that we have experienced—and will continue to experience—is not unique to this neighborhood; quite the contrary. The thing is that citizens, especially older ones, still remember the days when practically everything was bought in the neighborhood and people only “went to Barcelona” on special occasions.

Today, these local shops, which were mainly family businesses, have gradually given way to franchises, large stores, and online shopping, which allows you to buy whatever you want, from wherever you want, whenever you want, and from whomever you want, especially Mr. Bezos.

The result of this commercial evolution can be divided into three groups of businesses: those that have disappeared, those that remain, and those that are emerging again. This classification does not include restaurants, which, given their history and proliferation in the neighborhood, deserve a specific analysis.

Those that have disappeared

Unfortunately, this is the largest group. It would be unfair to make a list, because we would leave out many, many others. However, everyone—depending on their age, habits, and customs—has their own mental list.

Based on the idea that “you could buy practically anything in the neighborhood,” it is easy to deduce that everything that cannot be found within a few meters of home today has disappeared. They were family-run businesses, close by and charming, where the shopkeeper addressed customers by name. With them, not only does the livelihood of many families disappear, but also part of the neighborhood’s personality.

Those that remain

These long-standing businesses that still survive are exceptional. They are usually based on specialization and the quality of their offerings. Some retain their almost original appearance, which is part of their charm; others have evolved to adapt to changing times.

Unfortunately, many have had to close due to a lack of generational succession. However, they tend to retain a loyal clientele who appreciate the effort and, above all, the friendly service they offer.

Those that arise

A lively, cosmopolitan neighborhood in constant evolution—with both long-time residents and newcomers, but with new shared needs and tastes—demands the emergence of new ideas.

In Barceloneta, the emergence of new commercial businesses is a reality we see every day. These establishments are usually run by young people from different backgrounds who have decided to invest in the neighborhood. We can only wish these entrepreneurs the best for their businesses and, at the same time, ask them to show the utmost respect for a unique neighborhood of which they are now an active part.

This is our commerce: the traditional and also the new.
