Aimed at boosting local trade
Barcelona City Council is launching a new edition of Bonus Consum, an initiative designed to revitalise local trade and encourage shopping at local shops across the city. The campaign will be rolled out in two phases, in autumn 2026 and early 2027, and will enable residents to obtain €10 vouchers to spend at local shops.
The campaign forms part of Barcelona’s designation as the European Capital of Local Commerce 2026 and has a budget of €4 million. The City Council estimates that the initiative will have an impact of around 12 million euros on the local retail sector, as the vouchers will enable purchases of at least 30 euros to be made at participating shops.
How will the Bonus Consum vouchers work?
Adults living in Barcelona will be able to register for the scheme via a website. Each person will be eligible for a maximum of three vouchers per phase, i.e. up to six vouchers in total between 2026 and 2027. Each voucher will be worth 10 euros and can be used on purchases of 30 euros or more at participating shops.
At the start of each phase, registered participants will be eligible for a first voucher, valid for two months. If they use it within the first fifteen days, they will be eligible for a second voucher. And, if they use the first two vouchers at shops in the neighbourhood where they live, they will be able to obtain a third voucher, as an incentive to shop locally. In the second phase, scheduled for 2027, the same procedure will be repeated.
Where can they be used?
Among the businesses taking part in the campaign are: greengrocers, butchers, fishmongers, bakeries, patisseries, bookshops, florists, hardware shops, clothes shops, shoe shops, toy shops, sports shops, electrical goods shops, hairdressers, newsagents, photographic services and veterinary centres, amongst others. Excluded are restaurants, large retail chains, franchises, 24-hour shops and services, unstaffed self-service outlets, gambling and gaming establishments, shops selling CBD and cannabis-derived products, e-cigarettes, tobacco, alcoholic drinks, and the purchase of vouchers or gift cards using the vouchers. In summary, these cover retail – both food and non-food – and everyday services.
The new Consum Vouchers revive an initiative that was first launched in late 2021, as part of the post-pandemic economic recovery.
