We will soon be celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Barceloneta Community Plan. Over the last twenty years, neighbors, organizations, businesses, facilities, and services in the neighborhood, with the support of the public administration, have been implementing a series of projects with the aim of improving the quality of life of Barceloneta residents and responding to the challenges and concerns that have been raised by everyone involved.
We have worked in areas that we all consider important: the elderly, children and young people, health, housing, culture, the right to food, education, work, etc.
Throughout this time, important initiatives have been launched for the neighborhood: Barceloneta Proa a la Mar, a local employment and development project that seeks to restore our neighborhood’s relationship with the sea; The Employment Information and Guidance Point (PIOL), a platform that supports job seekers and connects them with companies in the region and the neighborhood; Barceloneta Diversa, which seeks to achieve social cohesion through an intercultural approach, involving all stakeholders in the neighborhood and striving to integrate the neighborhood’s residents regardless of their origin; o Guingueta Proa en el Mar, a community social and employment initiative that has employed more than 20 people since its opening in 2018, mainly long-term unemployed people, women with family responsibilities, and young people in their first job. In the midst of the pandemic, we launched the Office for Assistance with Online Procedures, which over the last five years has helped more than 1,500 people with all kinds of procedures, including guidance and advice on rights that our neighbors sometimes discover they have. With an average of more than four visits per person, the number of procedures carried out far exceeds 6,000.
The Persianas Vivas project, now in its fourth year, is a community urban art project. It seeks to improve people’s health and well-being through artistic practices and by creating alliances between artists, public institutions, and neighborhood communities. It is aimed at young people between the ages of 16 and 25.
The Health School, the Housing Commission, Prometeus Barceloneta, the Gender Committee, projects related to the elderly such as Buen vecino, Buen Provecho, Buena vecindad con la gente mayor and Respira Cuidador, and many others that are only possible thanks to the generous involvement of volunteers and professionals who live and feel their neighborhood and fight to achieve a better life for everyone.
We want this to continue, because there can be no community or community plan without the involvement of the neighborhood, contributing ideas at the various working tables or steering groups, or offering their services as volunteers when necessary.
For this reason, in the coming months we will organize events to commemorate this important date and we will also convene a Neighborhood Steering Group in which anyone who wants to can get involved to revitalize the sense of community and propose proactive and constructive measures with the aim of improving the quality of life in our neighborhood, which we love so much and will always carry in our hearts: Barceloneta.
