Barceloneta writes #2

Recommendations for Autumn

After summer, when the evenings are longer, we spend more time at home. It is at this time of year when a good book will also help us get through the hours of darkness. On this occasion, we recommend a couple of titles in which our neighbourhood, Barceloneta, is the protagonist.

“The inifinite beach” by Antonio Iturbe is a novel, a sentimental guide. Iturbe, who lived in the neighbourhood years ago, returns to meet his alter ego from the past; but the old fishermen’s neighbourhood where he grew up has disappeared in the middle of tourist flats. Massive changes and (perhaps) happening too fast!

On the other hand, we would like to highlight a book that we presented exclusively on the 21st of May: “La Barceloneta desaparecida” by Francesc Caballé Esteve. This compilation consists of 182 pages full of photographs of narrow streets, squares, businesses that no longer exist, beaches, popular festivals, etc. A nostalgic look that fills us with good memories.

The Independent Publisher of the Month.

Today we would like to present one of the projects of the bookshop that we are most proud of: the Independent Publisher of the Month.

This October it was LaBreu’s turn, a non-profit cultural association that supports and disseminates quality poetry and literature in Catalan. Its editor, Ester Andorrà, explained to us personally how they work.

In poetry, their ambition is to bring to light new or forgotten voices of authors whose literary quality and ambition place them on the fringes of present success and at the gates of historical validity. Voices such as those of Josep Pedrals, Mireia Calafell and Miriam Cano.

In narrative, they want to promote new young, daring, innovative, surprising and quality values, such as Jordi Cussà, Victor Sunyol or Biel Mesquida; as well as adopting into our language exceptional works that have never been translated into Catalan, such as those of Dovlatov or AnaïsNin.
