Barcelona, city of the sea

Barcelona has discovered itself as a city that lives facing the sea! 2024 was a blue year: the UNESCO Ocean Decade Conference, the America’s Cup and the Cultural Regatta that accompanied it, the Catalan Skating Regatta, the Vive la Vela and Mirada Azul school programmes, the Sea of Activities in Odyssey Square, Christmas at the Port in the Moll de la Madera… and the Beach Centre, which since 2005 has been the city’s benchmark facility for education about the sea.

This year the Beach Centre has brought more than 7,000 people closer to the sea: it has offered some eighty marine and maritime experiences, in which more than 1,100 people have participated; it has been present at 11 events, with some 2,500 people; the monthly exhibitions have been visited by 2,700 people throughout the April-October season; in addition, some 700 children from the summer camps have enjoyed activities that have made them have a good time and have brought them closer to respect for the sea. In Barcelona there are also organisations, coordinated by the Beach Centre, whose mission is to raise public awareness of responsible consumption and civic behaviour through volunteer actions to collect waste on the beaches. In 2024, a hundred of these actions were carried out, collecting hundreds of kilograms of waste and involving some 5,300 people.

It is clear that people in Barcelona are increasingly realising that the city offers many opportunities to enjoy natural spaces – the sea and beaches – very close to home, with experiences within everyone’s reach. These ecosystems also provide us with health, quality food, oxygen, climate regulation and coastal protection; in short, life!

From the Beach Centre we express the desire for a 2025 of healing towards the sea and beaches, so that all people can enjoy them with respect and connect with all the benefits they bring us. That’s why the Centre is not stopping and will be offering activities in various spaces around the city until April, when it will reopen its doors to the porches of Somorrostro beach, with a new programme of free experiences for everyone.
