Am I from the neighborhood or am I in the neighborhood?

Who would have thought? The neighbourhood was already an example of innovation more than 150 years ago. La Maquinista was at the forefront of the country’s industry and remained so for decades.

Who would have thought? The neighbourhood continues to be an example of technological innovation 150 years later. Some of the most advanced digital, technological and research centres and ecosystems are located here.

It seems that life, like fashion, repeats itself… or is that not exactly the case?

Let’s ask ourselves first: do its residents lose sleep over whether the neighbourhood is or is no longer an example of innovation? Because when we refer to a neighbourhood, we are not just talking about territory, square metres or streets and squares; it is, above all, a neighbourhood issue. Neighbourhoods are people.

150 years ago, with La Maquinista, it was very clear. The company employed a large part of the local population and also actively collaborated, socially and economically, in improving the life of its surroundings, its neighbourhood.

Now, is the same true of what we might call the ‘current Maquinistas’? Of course, you will tell me that such neighbourhood participation in the workforces of the technology companies located in the neighbourhood is unfeasible. We agree; it would be difficult to find many biomedical researchers or AI experts among the residents.

But what we want to remind you from these pages is not to forget that, even though there are hardly any locals on their staff, they are part of the neighbourhood. And because of that, because of them, there is always something to do. Just as La Maquinista has been doing for 150 years.
