How exciting and nerve-wracking! It was the most magical night. The night they sent us to bed early, but we weren’t sleepy.
We had to leave water, bread, and straw or hay for the camels, and a little sweet wine and pastries for Their Majesties. We also had to leave our shoes outside so they would recognize us. They sent us to bed, and we always tried to stay awake and wait for them, but in the end, sleep overcame us. When we woke up, we ran to see what they had left us. Guns with a holster and vest, a ball, and for the girls, a doll, a jump rope, and clothes to change the doll into.
Then we went outside to play with our friends. I remember one year they brought me a remote-controlled car, a “Tiburón Payá,” with a two-meter cable and a steering wheel at the end of the cable. We had a great time with very little. Besides, we always had the street… when it was ours.
