Barceloneta is a woman

The importance of women in Barceloneta has always existed, back when terms such as feminism, empowerment and gender equality were still unknown, women have always been entrepreneurs or heads of household In this neighborhood, creating and moving their businesses and homes forward.

Both the home, while their husbands were at sea, in the factory or in the port; and their business, because many of them were the ones who ran the restaurant or snack bar, the shop, the market stall or the family business.

In many ways, La Barceloneta has been a matriarchy. Without posturing, without demands and often without being aware of it.

Palmira, Pilar, Lola, Nitus , Carmen, Leo, Emilia, Antonia, and so many others, it is impossible to list them all.

In this issue we wanted to pay tribute to these women, and we thought that this new generation of stevedores (a traditionally male job) was a worthy way to do so.

For them. Thanks to them.
