25 years of the library

Time has flown by, but here we are celebrating the library’s silver anniversary. On May 21, it will have been 25 years since it first opened its doors in the neighborhood. The opening coincided with the creation of the Barcelona Library Consortium, the organization that manages all of the city’s public libraries.

Over the years, the library has established itself as a cultural hub in the neighborhood, offering activities that promote reading, learning, education, and access to information for all ages.

We would like to especially highlight the outstanding work of Director Maria Josep Fontova, who led the library from day one until her retirement in May 2023. Currently, Helena Moyà serves as director. Each month, an average of 3,200 people visit us, and nearly 4,000 items are checked out from the 38,000-copy collection that makes up the library’s holdings.

The first celebratory activity was a public vote to choose the logo that will accompany us throughout the year. A total of 150 people participated, and a set of two books was raffled off among them, won by neighborhood resident Jordi Lázaro.

The week of May 18 will be packed with activities. We’ll kick things off on Monday with a cake party for all the neighborhood Catalan conversation groups, followed by a children’s storytelling session, a historical talk about the building, the premiere of a documentary about the library produced by BarcelonetaTV, and we’ll wrap things up on Friday with a concert by the rock band Crisis.

We’re celebrating at the library… and we hope to see you there!
