La Barceloneta writes

LA GARBA

There is a lot of artistic restlessness in Barceloneta: there are painters, artisans, musicians, people who try to carry out their artistic, transformative projects, and they all encounter the obstacles of a neighbourhood so gentrified that even renting a place to push those projects forward becomes an impossible mission. And there are also writers. Today, we will talk about them.

Last year, two authors, Ana Ayala – the writer, and Vendela Vrenks – the illustrator, published within the call for projects of the Casa de la Barceloneta 1761, a splendid children’s story “La iaia i el suquet de peix de la Barceloneta” with two editions already sold out.

The Barceloneta Alerta Association enters the field of publishing through its new publishing house LA GARBA. On the other hand, the call for the Short Story Contest is still open, with the due date for entries now extended until the end of the year. Its aim is to publish a book with the most interesting stories that are submitted.

FAHRENHEIT 451

Full summer, blazing sun, there’s nothing better than to immerse oneself in seafaring readings with a series of books that will be part of the Maritime Reading Club that will start in winter.

Everyone in Barceloneta knows that the sea is the main form of exchanging ideas and cultures between people, and that is precisely what is explored in “The Boundless Sea” by the erudite David Abulafia, a general history of man’s relationship with the oceans. A more local perspective can be found in the fabulous stories “Sea Water” by Josep Pla, which offer everything from noir novels to travel texts and descriptions of local customs and manners. Another classic, not so remembered for the sea, is Pío Baroja, by whom we recommend “Las inquietudes de Shanti Andía”, an authentic formative novel of sea adventures. We finish with Carne de sirena, a pitch-black novel set in the Costa da Morte, the prose pricking like a caulking scraper of the recently recovered Montero González, a cursed and brilliant author if there ever was one.
